Chapter 24
“Rocky!” Lucky echoed.
“What?” she snapped back. “It takes a second to initialize.”
“This is a long second!”
“It’s taking a little longer because Malby managed to run it without a full cycle when he crashed it.”
Lucky had to pull himself tight against the bike as it tumbled, or risk coming right off. Jack’s mass behind him wasn’t helping, but at least the big man seemed to intuit that he needed to help holding them tight to the bike, and he was clamping his feet down inside the pedal well, holding his ass to the hoverbike seat.
The forward screen on the bike had flashed a series of code letters, then gone blank.
“This isn’t very impressive so far,” Jack said over his shoulder, although Lucky sensed that he wasn’t that worried.
In truth, neither was Lucky. They could, after all, just leap off the bike and use their own glide suits to ride the upwells. But that would mean that Billy would be able to keep taking shot at the sled unimpeded.
The screen on the front of the bike blinked back into life. Lucky sensed the wing stabilizers sliding out of the bike’s base, which would provide some glide ability similar to the fins the dive suits revealed once they were inside the atmosphere proper.
“A little help,” Rocky echoed.
Lucky glanced down and saw one of the fins was only partially extended. That side of the bike had smashed hard against the sides of the bulkhead in the sled before coming to rest in the cockpit.
Before he could figure out what to do, Jack followed his line of sight and then gave Lucky a pat on the back. What the hell was that—
Jack lifted his leg and smashed down like a jackhammer on the forward edge of the fin. The force sent the bike, which had been tumbling already, into a barrel roll.
“Great work,” Rocky said sarcastically.
But the big kick did the job. The fin seemed to break loose of whatever was holding it. It completed its extension, and the limited thrusters on the bottom began stabilizing the spin. Soon they were level, and pointed more or less straight down.
Jack tapped Lucky again on the shoulder, then pointed over Lucky’s shoulder. It seemed like he was pointing at nothing but open air, but Lucky knew better.
So did Rocky. She adjusted the thrusters and gave the bike a nudge. After what seemed like an eternity of falling, the nose suddenly shifted upward so violently it almost threw both of them off.
Rocky adjusted instantly to angle the bike around the edge of the gravity well, right at the weird intersection where the artificial upward gravity met the natural downward gravity, and weaved expertly in and out of it, slowly allowing the bike to rise up as it went.
“Where the hell is everybody?” Lucky echoed.
In the chaos to get the hoverbike into a decent glide, they’d fallen way behind the other two ships. They were both under power and merely threading around the gravity wells, so they were making much better time.
